As a work from home blogger I’ve started many blogs in a variety of niches I thought I could make money in, but didn’t.

Nothing really worked for me until I started my first blog based on one of my many hobbies and interests. As soon as I started blogging about something I was truly passionate about, which was home gardening, I started earning some money.

The money was a little here and there but as my traffic increased so did my earnings.

I wasn’t completely convinced I hadn’t just lucked out so I started a second blog in another hobby niche, fishing this time. I just had to look at myself and determine what I liked about the hobby and what things I was interested in. My advice is for you to have your own domain and not to go with a free blogging platform as it screams newbie and not business owner. The thing is no one can have the same domain name so you have to come up with a good one and it needs to be keyworded to your niche.

1. Registering Your Domain Name

I use GoDaddy.com to register all my domains today so that I have blogs, WordPress blogs, in all the niches I have an interest in. I don’t like blogs that cover too many niches as they don’t seem to be focused enough making them harder to rank in the major search engines.

This is you unique address, which no one else can have.

2. Hosting Your Domain

You can’t just purchase/register your new domain and leave it at that because no one will ever see your site. You need to have your domain hosting so the entire world will be able to find your site, once it’s been setup.

My domain hosting is done with HostGator.com and has been for a decade, at least. It took me a long time to find a good hosting service that doesn’t leave me hanging and HostGator takes care of me and my domains.

3. Setup A WordPress Blog

Once you have registered your keyword focused domain, which requires some researching into your niche to find the right keywords, and have it hosted at HostGator.com you are ready to install a WordPress blog.

4. Log In To Your Hosting Account

Before you hosting account on HostGator.com will be visible to the world you need to change the DNS values for your domain at GoDaddy. The DNS values are giving to you when you register your hosting account with HostGator.

The DNS values will look something like: NS285.WEBSITEWELCOME.COM or it could be all numbers.

1. To change the DNS for your domain with GoDaddy you can login to your GoDaddy.com account and then click ACCOUNT on the right of the page.
2. Next click the plus sign before Domains to see your domain.
3. Click the Green Launch button on the right of you domain.
4. Now you should see a row of icons. Click the one that says DNS and then click Set Nameservers.
5. Click the radio button that says “I have specific nameservers for my domains.”
6. Copy and paste that DNS values given in your initial email from HostGator.com.

It may take a few hours before you site will be visible globally but you have done what is needed to make it happen.

5. Setup Your WordPress Blog

Now you will be able to use Fantastico through the cPanel at HostGator. In your initial email from HostGator you will find the info you need to log into your account’s control panel. You can access your account even though it may not be activated yet.

Once your domain has been come live you will be able to access the control panel or cPanel using the following text in your browser.

http://www.yourdomainname.com/cpanel

Scroll until you see Fantastico and click it to open it. Next look on the left and choose WordPress.

To the left is the WordPress setup Fantastico presents. All you need to do is fill in the blanks.

1. First you should see your domain name where it says ‘Install on Domain’. Leave that as is.

2. If you plan to have your WordPress blog as your main site you don’t need to fill in the Install in Directory. If your wish to install it in a directory or folder you will just enter the folder name in the empty box.

This means your blog will be in a folder and not the root of the domain.

3. Next you can enter the name you would like as administrator and also the password you would like. Make sure your password is not easy to figure out as it’s your defense against less honest people.

4. Next you can enter the name you would like to use as the blogger owner. Include an email address where you can receive emails from the system and those who comment on your blog posts.

Next you can give your site a name and description, which can be changed at any time from within your WordPress admin area.

Your WordPress account should be setup at this point and you can now move onto finding just the right theme for your needs and your readers.

Where do most would be marketers go wrong with Internet marketing? By far the majority of niche marketing wannabes don’t do the required niche research and pay dearly it as the results is almost always lack of success.

• Is There Money In The Niche

You need to know if there is money in the niche you are thinking about. If there are only a few people spending money in a niche it may not be worth your time and effort for a tiny bit of income. Put your efforts into something you can actually make money with, if your goal is to make money online.

• Can You Compete With Your Competition

This is another area that newbies waste time. They will go into a niche that has lots of money without thinking about those who came before. They are likely to have so much competition for keywords that you most likely won’t get any traffic to your website.

• Finding The Keywords For You

I use a niche and keyword tool called Keyword Elite 2 for all my niche research so that I can find the keywords I can use to get traffic today and still make money. Learn this phase of niche research and you are on the right track to profits.

3. Create Compelling Content

You can have all the previous steps done properly but it’s only the beginning. Now it’s time to start writing compelling content for your visitors. You have to take the keywords you’ve researched to find and use them to feed your readers as well as the major search engines.

• Use Your Keywords Wisely

Each and every article or post your write needs to be thought out and focused on your keywords. This is going to involved keyword density and placement.

• Keyword Density

The amount of times you use your keyword phrases in your article or post is important. Too few times and it may not have enough focus for the search engines to figure it out and the result could be less target traffic or even no target traffic.

Too many on the other hand tends to look spammy and that doesn’t go well with search engines today or for that matter your visitors as spammy sites cause people to hit the back button.

Personally I like to keep the keyword density between 3 and 5 percent, maybe a little higher but not much.

• Keyword Placement

Because you keyword density is important you only have so many times you can use them and now placement becomes important.Where you place your keywords. This is how I use my keywords most of the time.

Title – I always use my keyword in my title and as close to the left as possible so the search engines see it as important.

First Paragraph or 150 Words – I like to use my keyword phrase within the first 150 words of my article or post  and if possible within the first paragraph.

Again In The Middle – I like an even distribution of my keyword phrase throughout the entire article so I aim for the middle as my articles are mostly between 300 and 500 words.

As Well As The End – I always end my articles and blog posts with my keyword phrase being in the last paragraph. This way I have spread my keywords throughout my article so it doesn’t look the slightest bit spammy and have never really had an issue with the search engines.

4. Affiliate Marketing Products

When the goal is to make money online it’s going to require you either own a product or you need to find a product you can sell which means other people’s products which is known mostly as affiliate products through affiliate marketing.

What you promote of course will depend on your niche and target group. In order to find products, once you have done your research, is to use your favourite search engine to find affiliate products.

A simple search engine search using your main keywords as well as the phrase affiliate program should produce results with affiliate programs you can join and earn commissions for product sales.

Where you locate your vegetable garden is key to real veggie growing. Just like real estate people say when talking about buying real estate. The three most important things are location, location, location. The key reason for location is to give your vegetable garden 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight each day.

We love trees but those we have growing along the east side of our property have grown too tall and now block our vegetable garden from getting any sunlight until after 10 in the morning and it’s getting worse by the year. When we bought the place they weren’t much higher than the property fence, so about 5 feet tall.

The sun would rise above our neighbours house at about 9am and as the trees grew it went from about 9am to 10 and now it’s about 11am before they get direct sunlight. Each year, as the trees grew taller, the sun takes longer and longer to shine on our garden.

The garden is already located in the best spot on the property so as much as it saddens me to cut down trees at least four of them have to go if I expect my garden to get that much needed 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight. Location, Location, Location.

Drainage problems have been the biggest concern with the location we choose to start our vegetable garden. Our yard is very dense clay that is tough to dig up. When it was dry it took a pickaxe to dig it up and when it’s wet it’s so heavy it wears my out in minutes.

But we had to work with what we had and this was the best location which was the first and most important step in the step by step gardening process.

This same location in spring creates a swimming hole for the local ducks flying over as the water can take days to drain.

When I started the garden I began with a hole about a foot deep and filled it with water and that took a couple of days to drain.

Step by Step #3 – Start Smart, Start Small

You’ve likely heard the phrase ‘go big or stay home’, well that was my thinking before my heart attack. Looking back now I am sure I would have given up long before every planting a single plant. That’s how tough it was to create our vegetable garden with just a shovel and pickaxe.

Today my motto is to ‘start small and grow with it’.

It’s easy to do so much you get completely overwhelmed when starting your first vegetable garden. If my health didn’t hold me back I would have been one of those who would start with a big garden and then regret doing.

There are many things that can go wrong when first learning about vegetable gardening and with a huge garden it’s likely that all problems will appear making it a far less enjoyable experience. So start small and let it be a growing experience.

Our first vegetable garden was only 4 feet by 4 feet but after taking days to dig it and amend the soil, test the drainage again, dig it more, amend it more and test it again I was so glad I had not started with an 8 by 8 veggie garden. I would have run out of steam long before I would ever have drained well enough.

Bad habits can be tough to break, trust me I am an expert and have had a lot of practice breaking bad habits. Like smoking, I got an early start at age 15 and then worked hard for 30 years trying to break the habit. Eventually I learned by having my first heart attack. I quit smoking immediately.
